FAQs
Can you tell me about the band classes at Rice High School?
All high school band students participate in marching band during the fall semester from August through December. After marching season, students transition to concert season and continue with concert band from January through May.
Freshmen (09) and sophomores (10) are eligible to receive 0.5 credit of PE for marching band and 0.5 credit of fine arts for participation in concert band.
Juniors (11) & seniors (12) receive 1 full credit of fine arts from full year participation in band (marching band & concert band).
Can I get all the classes I need and still be in band?
Yes! The Rice High School class schedule and course sequence allows you to take all of the classes needed to graduate and still participate in band all four years of high school. The credits earned in band all count towards your state graduation requirements.
PLEASE NOTE: You can be in band for four years in high school and get everything you need to graduate!
How much does it cost for my child to be in band?
The cost to participate in the Rice HS Band is minimal! The primary band costs are for student meals during travel for away football games and marching band contests.
Students will also need to pay for their band shirt (approximately $20), marching band shoes ($40), gloves ($4.00) and an optional annual SmartMusic subscription ($40).
How much time does band take?
As with any activity, there is some extra time required for rehearsals and performances outside of the normal school day. However, it is not nearly the time commitment some people make it out to be. In fact, when compared to many other band programs or other types of school activities across the state, you will be surprised at how little extra time is actually required. Marching season generally runs 13-14 weeks out of the 36-week school year. A few extra rehearsals are called during concert season. Band does require some extra individual commitment, but as with anything worthwhile, the more you invest, the more you get out of the program. Remember, anything done well requires an investment of time & effort.
The band directors and school administration provide every opportunity possible for any student who wishes to participate in band to do so, regardless of their family’s financial situation or other conflicts. If a student needs an instrument, Rice CISD can furnish an instrument for the student to use while in band at Rice CISD.
